Sandestin Community Participates in National Preparedness Month Programs?

9/12/2023 (Permalink)

Windows are boarded up in preparation for a hurricane. We are leaders in storm damage restoration in Walton County.

Our local Destin, Seaside, and Freeport teams have been restoring storm damage in Sandestin for over twenty years. Powerful storms can cause severe damage to homes and properties, and we want everyone to be prepared to weather any storm or disaster.

Every September, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) hosts National Preparedness Month, a month filled with information, activities, community initiatives, and awareness campaigns to create awareness about the importance of being prepared for disasters and emergencies. This year, the campaigns focus on elderly populations and their unique needs. Additional resources will be posted on Ready.gov/older-adults.

Addressing the unique needs for support and services older individuals may require in an emergency not only boosts their ability to endure difficult situations but also lessens the effects of emergencies on their well-being. The elderly may encounter heightened risks during disasters due to factors like prescribed medications, reliance on specialized medical equipment, or the need for specific care, all of which can be severely impacted during emergencies. Also, older populations are particularly susceptible to heat or cold-related illnesses and dehydration. By preparing in advance to meet their unique needs, we can safeguard their welfare and maintain their safety during disasters and emergencies.

Waterspout Threatens to Damage Property in Destin?

8/14/2023 (Permalink)

A large waterspout is seen. We are leaders in storm damage restoration services in Okaloosa County.

Our local Destin, Seaside, and Freeport teams restore storm damage 24 hours a day, 365 days a year in Destin. Storm damage can take many forms, including waterspout damage. Last year, a massive waterspout was spotted off Destin Beach. These whirling columns of air and water mist have the same characteristics as a land tornado. The damage waterspouts can cause depends on the intensity, duration, and proximity to land, structures, and people. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, waterspouts come in two categories of severity:

Tornadic Waterspouts

These are the more powerful and potentially dangerous types of waterspouts. Tornadic waterspouts are formed by a rotating updraft associated with a severe thunderstorm or a supercell. They have a more well-defined structure and are similar to land-based tornadoes. Tornadic waterspouts can have strong winds and may exhibit a visible debris cloud beneath the funnel. They can cause significant damage if they move onshore or encounter boats or other structures on the water.

Fair Weather Waterspouts

Fair weather waterspouts are less intense than tornadic waterspouts and typically form in relatively calm weather conditions, often under the base of developing cumulus clouds. They are typically smaller in size and weaker in terms of wind speed compared to tornadic waterspouts. Fair-weather waterspouts are usually short-lived and less likely to cause significant damage. However, they can still pose a threat to boats and swimmers if they come into close proximity.

Destin Stormy Weather and Flooding in Your Home? Mitigation of Damages Are a Priority--Call SERVPRO for Professional Help

1/11/2022 (Permalink)

Flooded street and Road Closed Sign SERVPRO Recommends to Call Us for Flood Damage Cleanup in the Destin Area--Done Right the First Time!

Flood Damage Restoration in Your Destin Home?

If something disastrous, like flood damage in the Florida Panhandle, happened to your home, you might consider trying to remediate the damage yourself to lessen the overall expenses. While it is true that DIY jobs generally cost less than hiring professional services, it may not always be worth risking further damage to your home due to inexperience. Having first-hand knowledge about the Cleanup and Restoration Industry can help ensure that the remediation goes right the first time.

Let's say that the flood damage in your Destin home came from a flash flood. While you were at work, a severe storm rolled in and caused a flash flood. The water level rose until it managed to flood the entry room of your home before it retreated again when the storm subsided.

There are some key reasons to contact professional Cleanup and Restoration services, such as SERVPRO, instead of handling a job like this yourself. Flood Damage Cleanup in Santa Rosa Beach Homes

Flood damage delivers several levels of loss when it hits a house. Even when the scale of water intrusion is small, the costs can be severe due to the possibility of contaminants or sewage.

Scoping Santa Rosa Beach properties with flood damage using professional moisture detection equipment is crucial. It is impossible to see every place in the room water migrates. It seeps under floors, behind walls, and the techs carefully go through the room to determine the exact scale of the water loss.

Safety During Cleanup
Testing the water is another critical element to determine the presence of any toxins or sewage and apply the appropriate treatments to lessen the danger during cleanup and restoration services. When dealing with floodwater, the techs wear full-body protection, including respirators, to avoid aspirating airborne molecules.

Common Loss Items
Contents of the home that absorb floodwater frequently do not have restoration potential. Carpet and padding become extremely heavy when saturated and require extraction before removal. They are then cut into strips and disposed of as a biohazard. While the sheetrock on the walls may wick water and require sections get cut away to halt any further loss, if the baseboards are hardwood, they may be suitable for reuse after drying and disinfection.

Drying and Monitoring
The drying phase gets frequent checking of the air moisture levels to ensure that pre-set drying goals get attained. The techs use centrifugal air movers along with dehumidifiers to capture the embedded water vapor that gets raised by the high-velocity airflow. This assists with not only facilitating expedited drying but also evenly dries the loss area.

Mold Prevention or Remediation
SERVPRO techs undergo training and certification in mold remediation #MRSR309 and #MRSR377. With this knowledge, they know the unmistakable early signs of an infestation and how to halt the spread. The application of antimicrobial cleaners and sealants on the exposed framework assists with inhibiting mold spore germination.

Road sign warning of storm SERVPRO Can Remediate Storm Damage Quickly

SERVPRO Specializes in Fast Water Removal and Restoration of Damaged Properties

Property damage from flooding in Florida is nearly as common as rain during storm season. The rapid arrival of thunderstorms and the massive deposits of rainwater can overwhelm a home or business that is unprepared for it.

Inlet Beach flood damage can happen during or after one of these storms. SERVPRO has the training to help you identify possible threats to your property before it happens and the equipment to deal with any problem swiftly and efficiently. Company technicians are fully qualified under the guidelines established by the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning, and Restorations (IICRC). Extensive courses are completed in the areas of Water Damage Restoration, Carpet Cleaning, Applied Structural Drying, Microbial Remediation and Upholstery, and Fabric Cleaning.

Our inspectors are trained not just to analyze a problem after it happens, but also to examine a home or commercial structure for preventable situations. In many cases, flood damage arises because drainage systems are clogged or otherwise compromised. If a rain gutter system doesn't direct excess water, the results can close the doors of a business. We offer a free inspection to help our customers prepare. The equipment our employees use is at the forefront of the restoration industry. We remove standing water using pumps that can be fully submerged in water and run continuously. If the power has been knocked out, we bring our own generators, which can be difficult to rent after a tropical storm, and keep personnel on-site to ensure constant water removal. Once that is accomplished, we put our commercial-grade drying equipment to work. The industrial-grade humidifiers and air movers (fans) we use quickly pull moisture from the air and out of water-logged carpets and flooring to prevent odor, mold, and warping. With everything dried out, we go to work removing that 'musty odor' from your structure. The air scrubbers we use remove airborne particles to improve air quality while the deodorization chemicals and foggers we deploy clean out the HVAC system.

If you are worried about possible, future flood damage or you see signs on your property that there may already be a problem, now is the time to contact SERVPRO of Destin, Seaside, and Freeport. Call us today at (850) 267-0746.

How Can You Protect Your Home from the Worst Effects of Flooding?

12/21/2021 (Permalink)

photo of a tablet and smartphone with ERP apps SERVPRO Says to Walton County Property Owners--Be Prepared for Storms, Hurricanes, and Flooding with our ERP Emergency READY Profile Plan

You Can Mitigate the Effects of Flooding on Your Walton County Home by Doing a Few Simple Things Before and After a Flood.

Due to its location on the Gulf Coast, Walton County is especially prone to hurricanes and the flooding they generally bring.  These massive storms routinely pass over the county between June and the end of November, rapidly dropping several inches of rain, knocking over trees, and whipping up the surf in their path.  In their wake, they often leave extensive damage that requires the assistance of trained remediation professionals.  Moreover, if proper precautions are not taken before a severe weather event and there are no mitigation efforts after such an occurrence, cleanup and restoration could become quite costly.  Fortunately, modern weather forecasting has made it possible to effectively prepare for approaching storms and plan post-storm efforts up to a week before they arrive.

How Can I Lessen the Potential Impact of a Future Flooding Event Today?

There are numerous things you can do now to substantially better your odds of avoiding or more easily remedying the worst flood damage Walton County weather is capable of causing.  The following is a list of measures SERVPRO, a local cleanup, and restoration service, suggests that you take to protect your home before storms are even forecasted:

  • Go to the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) website and, using its search tool, enter your home’s address to determine its zone designation and risk of flooding
  • Make sure your homeowner's insurance policy covers flood damage if you are located in a higher risk area and if it does not, buy flood insurance (note: flood insurance is required as a condition of many Florida mortgages)
  • If you ever notice standing water issues around your community following rains, contact your county government about possibly improving the drainage in your area
  • Find out the base flood elevation (BFE), or the level floodwaters are predicted to rise to in your home during periods of severe flooding and try to locate all electrical sockets, electronics, appliances, backup generators, and any other sensitive equipment at least a foot above that imagined high water line
  • Hire a plumber to install a gate valve or backflow on every sewer pipe connected to your home so that floodwaters do not force sewage back up into your residence
  • Create a SERVPRO Emergency READY Profile (ERP) for your residence to establish SERVPRO as your remediator, record all contact information and critical details about your property, and facilitate the rapid development of a plan of action for when a flooding event occurs

All of these preventative actions should protect you from suffering the most costly and time-consuming to repair flood-related issues.

What Steps Can I Take Immediately Before a Potential Storm to Lower My Risks of Suffering Catastrophic Flood Damage?

Modern forecasting technologies, like advanced satellite imaging and radar, have made it much easier for local residents to reduce their overall weather-associated risks.  This they have been able to do by vigilantly monitoring weather conditions and properly preparing for all approaching severe storms.  Some of these preparations involve:

  • Repairing any roof damage and ensuring that your gutters are clean and in good working order
  • Making sure your drainage system is functional and draining water away from your home
  • Fixing any cracks or other foundation damage that might allow floodwaters into your basement or lower levels
  • Repairing driveways, sidewalks, and landscaping elements that might allow water to pool or to more easily flow toward your house
  • Sandbagging the perimeter of your property to divert stormwaters away from your residence
  • Shutting off utilities like electric, gas, and water before leaving your home

Simply by preparing in this way, SERVPRO asserts, you can sometimes avoid flooding and the headaches that come with it altogether.  Even if you are not that fortunate, these measures should markedly reduce the amount of floodwater that ultimately enters your home.

What Can I Do to Mitigate Damages After Flooding Occurs?

Once flooding occurs there are still a few things you can do to reduce overall damages.  In order to do this, SERVPRO suggests taking the following actions after a flood:

  • Contact a reputable flood damage remediation service as soon as possible
  • Refrain from using household appliances to avoid potential electrical issues
  • If it has been determined to be safe, open windows and use fans to ventilate your house; in the more humid summer months, close your windows and turn the air conditioner on to reduce interior humidity levels
  • Avoid walking on or touching impacted surfaces to prevent collapses or other additional damage
  • Quickly remove all remaining artworks and other valuable property to a safe location

In these simple ways, homeowners can help SERVPRO technicians get their work done more quickly once they arrive onsite.

Remember, though, your neighbors at SERVPRO of Destin, Seaside, and Freeport are always here to help.  Call us at (850) 267-0746 whenever you need us.

How Can Santa Rosa Beach Flood Damage Affect Floors and Subfloors?

12/10/2021 (Permalink)

Storm Damage When a central room like your living room faces flooding, the situation becomes critical. Contact our certified team for flood damage remediation.

SERVPRO Mitigates Flood Damage That Impacts Santa Rosa Beach Homes

Living room ground flooding can be catastrophic for various flooring surfaces, not to mention the drywall. Floodwaters can quickly crawl up sheetrock and render it a warped, crumbling mess, all while saturating carpet, delaminating floor adhesives, or damaging wood floorboards.

SERVPRO flood damage technicians clean Santa Rosa Beach homes with EPA-registered biocides to help return the property to a pre-disaster state. SERVPRO flood mitigation covers everything from a thorough initial inspection to structural repairs after cleanup per a homeowner’s insurance policy and restoration needs.

Flood Damage Cleanup Considerations for Residential Flooring

Flooding in a Santa Rosa Beach living room requires extra care, especially in homes with carpeting. The carpet and pad must be removed from the property by SERVPRO techs to ensure safety. Floodwaters bring in copious amounts of contamination and potential for microbial growth in porous surfaces.

  • A living room with carpet, on top of needing the carpet replaced, can have the subfloor treated with SERVPRO cleaning systems, such as cleaning syringes, pump or trigger sprayers, or fogging equipment
  • In homes with ceramic tile, the tiles themselves may be perfectly fine, but grout often swells and gets permeated by floodwater, which can seep into the subfloor
  • Restorable wood floorboards can be thoroughly cleaned with a rubber suction mat designed for wood flooring
  • Vinyl, whether in sheets or tiles, typically loses adhesion after a flood and is often more cost-effective to replace than repair

Residents looking for “Like it never even happened,” mitigation services can call SERVPRO of Destin, Seaside, and Freeport at (850) 267-0746.
